Matt graduated from Cambridge University in 1997. He joined the South East Scotland Emergency Medicine Training Programme in 2002 and has been a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Edinburgh since 2007. He completed his Doctorate of Medicine thesis in 2009.
Matt is a Founder member of the Emergency Medicine Research Group Edinburgh (EMeRGE), has previously been Regional College Academic Lead, Regional Ultrasound Co-ordinator for South East Scotland and Deputy Chair Injuries and Emergencies (Scotland). He currently sits on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Emergency Medicine, is a member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Research and Publication committee and is a member of the European Society of Cardiology syncope task force.
Matt has a strong interest in research with his main interests being syncope/transient loss of consciousness, emergency transfusion medicine, Emergency Department organ donation and the use of point of care ultrasound in cardiac arrest.
He has published over 60 peer reviewed papers as well as numerous conference presentations. He received The Royal Society of Medicine Emergency Medicine prize in 2006 and the College of Emergency Medicine Alison Gourdie award in 2007.
When not at work, Matt can be found on the cricket pitch at Inverleith Park.
